The Leonids meteor shower is active each November and normally peaks around 17-18 November. In ordinary years it produces up to about 15 meteors per hour from a dark site, but the Leonids are famous for rare storm years that can produce far higher rates. The meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Leo and come from debris left by comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. Viewing is best after midnight from a dark location with a clear eastern sky.
