Basking sharks visit UK waters seasonally to feed on plankton, with sightings most likely from May to September and often strongest in calm summer weather. Western coasts of Scotland, Cornwall, Devon, Wales and the Isle of Man are traditional hotspots. Sightings are never guaranteed because plankton, sea state and weather drive movements. Keep a respectful distance and follow Shark Trust wildlife watching guidance.

Generally May to September, with many sightings in June, July and August.
Western Scotland, Cornwall, Devon, Wales and the Isle of Man are regular hotspots.
They are huge but filter-feed on plankton. They should still be watched respectfully and not approached closely.
