Swallows usually return to the UK from late March, with most arrivals through April and May. They have long forked tails, red throats and often perch on wires or nest in barns and outbuildings. Do not confuse them with swifts, which arrive later, have scythe-shaped wings, almost never perch, and scream high over towns. Arrival dates vary with spring weather and insect numbers, so treat the window as seasonal rather than exact.

Usually from late March to May, with many seen in April.
Swallows have forked tails, red throats and perch on wires. Swifts are darker, scythe-winged, arrive later and spend most of life on the wing.
Look around farms, wetlands, villages and open countryside with flying insects.
