Swifts are among the last familiar summer migrants to arrive, usually appearing from late April into May. They are dark, sickle-winged birds that scream over rooftops and rarely land except at nest sites. This clearly separates them from swallows, which arrive earlier, have red throats and forked tails, and perch visibly on wires. Swift numbers have declined sharply, so reporting nest sites and installing swift boxes can help local colonies.
