UK bats emerge from winter torpor or hibernation as spring temperatures rise and insects become available. Activity usually increases from April, with May to September the best general watching season. Warm, still evenings around dusk are ideal near rivers, ponds, hedgerows and woodland edges. Bats and their roosts are legally protected, so do not disturb suspected roosts; seek Bat Conservation Trust advice if bats are in a building.
